A Toast to Life

We held Bill’s funeral in his home. The stone fire sent flickering shapes across the walls as winter rain ran in rivulets down the windows. Helen, his wife, was a wonderful cook and prepared all of Bill’s favourites.

We ate and drank together for an hour or so and then the service began. We all sat comfortably in lounge room, surrounded by paintings and artifacts that Bill had collected from all over the world.
We set up a projector and watched some family films Bill had recorded. From the movie of their first daughter being brought home, to the family holiday in Cairns.

There were snippets of parties, birthdays and weddings. Most of the guests appeared on the screen more than once. It brought back a lot of memories and seemed to bring everyone closer together.

We assembled down in his vast stone cellar. His best friend gave a short speech, as did Helen and their eldest daughter. Many others stood up and shared a story or two and then Bill’s brother read out a letter Bill had written to us all just days before he died. It was a moving thank you letter to all those who stood by him.

Helen made a presentation in honour of Bill. A bottle of wine for each of the guests had been selected from the cellar. We created a special label for the bottles that featured a quote by Bill. Guests were told to enjoy the wine in the company of good food and good friends. He demanded that they celebrated knowing him.

Thanks for your story Steve,Funeral Director, WA
