More people are choosing Cremation
Living in a multicultural and multi-faith society we have different attitudes and beliefs about death and the disposal of the dead. Currently, a cremation tends to be more popular (55% versus 45% for a burial). In areas where cremation facilities are common this percentage can be as high as 80%.
In case you missed reading the report, “Eight Key Trends Affecting Cremation”, in a nutshell, here are the eight trends:

  1. Life expectancy is increasing
  2. Migration to retirement locations is increasing
  3. Regional differences are diminishing
  4. Origins of immigrants are changing
  5. Educational levels are rising
  6. Cremation is becoming more acceptable as a normal form of disposition
  7. Family ties to tradition are lessening
  8. Environmental considerations are becoming more important

Having those facts are fine, but knowing the driving force behind those facts really helps to answer the question, “Why Cremation?” Further research, conducted by analysts at www.cremation.com revealed that the majority of ‘The Baby Boomers’ wanted to be cremated.”
The most common reasons were:

  • Once deceased they no longer need their bodies,
  • Cremation is quick, clean, and efficient,
  • It is less intrusive on the environment,
  • It is less wasteful of land;,
  • They don’t want people to have to feel obligated to visit their grave.
Burial is now seen as a more traditional choice. Burial has been a favoured choice for thousands of years in almost every culture.

The key reasons why burial is chosen:

  • Preference of the deceased
  • Preference by next-of-kin
  • Existing Family plot
  • Faith / religious belief

Cemation has been the choice of the current generation – viewed as a modern choice. It offers flexibility with the final
resting place. You may decide to bury the ashes, scatter them in an area important to the deceased, or to keep them
with you at home.

Interesting facts... Cremation rate in Australia is currently 70%. On average, ashes weight approx 2kg
