Planning your own funeral
Startling new findings from Galaxy Research on the way Australians deal with death and dying have found that three quarters of Australians have experienced the death of a loved one in the past three years, yet over half find it difficult to talk about and staggeringly less than 15% have made any preparations for their own death.

We all know that we should be planning for our future, but it seems that arranging your own funeral is simply one step too far for most. Latest research from MINTEL finds that while as many as 70% of adults feel that people should plan their own funerals to remove the burden from their loved ones, fewer than one in ten (9%) over 55 year olds have actually done this planning.

Although there is a good deal of informal planning of funerals and most consumers like the idea of arranging or pre-paying their funeral, this is rarely translated into formal planning of the event. Converting this potential interest into action is one of the major challenges facing the industry," comments Katy Child, senior market analyst at MINTEL.

Once the subject becomes less of a taboo, there will be a greater uptake on prepaid and prearranged funerals, as we have seen by the success in other countries, especially the US and Belgium.

So without telling people our wishes here’s what can happen…………A Funeral Arranger once told me an amusing story. At a viewing, two close friends of the deceased were seen to have a secret chuckle at the coffin side.

Curiosity got the better of her and she had to ask the ladies why they reacted the way they did, after all this was their lifelong friend. They told the Funeral Arranger how Faye had once been given a gift from her Husband….an unflattering red dress with lots buttons and bows.

She told them about her husband lack of fashion sense and exclaimed………..“I wouldn’t be caught dead in that dress”. Unfortunately Faye’s wish didn’t come true.
